A Better First Week
Many companies lose new employees within the first few months, and human resources teams are trying to change that. At Brightline Insurance, the HR department redesigned its first-week program last year. Before, new workers spent their first day filling out forms and reading long manuals. Now, they meet their team over breakfast, receive a laptop that is already set up, and are paired with a friendly coworker called a "buddy." The buddy answers small questions that people often feel embarrassed to ask, such as where to eat lunch or how to book a meeting room. At the end of the week, each person has a short conversation with an HR manager about how things are going. The results have been encouraging. Surveys show that new employees feel more welcome, and fewer of them leave in the first six months. HR leaders say the lesson is simple: people work better when they feel they belong, and a little planning can make that happen quickly.
